Irish banks join forces on new Zippay payment service

Zippay mobile payment service to launch in Ireland in early 2026.

AIB, Bank of Ireland and PTSB have announced plans to launch Zippay, a new person-to-person mobile payment service, in early 2026.

The service will be available to more than five million eligible customers and will be integrated directly into the banks’ existing mobile banking apps.

“This will provide a quick and easy way to send and receive money or split bills with friends, family and contacts who are also Zippay users”

Zippay will allow users to send, request and split payments instantly using the mobile number of contacts who are also Zippay users. The service is being delivered by European PayTech company Nexi, which has an established presence in Ireland’s financial services sector.

Smarter payments

Brian Hayes, chief executive of Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), said the service was developed in response to customer demand.

“This will provide a quick and easy way to send and receive money or split bills with friends, family and contacts who are also Zippay users,” Hayes said.

“It will be delivered through customers’ existing mobile banking apps and therefore comes with all the same high levels of security, protection and digital safety. It avoids the need for topping up a digital wallet or downloading a separate app.”

Hayes explained that eligible customers will be automatically enrolled in Zippay once the service launches.

“It will use mobile numbers saved in the customer’s contact list to identify who else uses Zippay. There will be no need to set up a new payee or know their IBAN, BIC or account numbers. The money will transfer between accounts seamlessly,” he said.

“The service will allow customers to send up to €1,000 per day and request up to €500 per transaction. It will be simple, speedy and secure.”

Designed for the future

Renato Martini, Digital Banking Solutions Director at Nexi Group, said Zippay was designed for scalability and future expansion.

“Built on an API-based architecture, Nexi has designed Zippay with the goal of making the solution as widely available as possible to customers across Ireland,” Martini said.
“After the initial launch, Zippay will be offered on a non-discriminatory basis to all financial institutions that provide IBAN account services and a mobile app to Irish consumers. Nexi will manage the integration of eligible financial institutions that wish to join the service.”

Martini added that delivering Zippay in Ireland reflects Nexi’s experience in launching innovative account-to-account solutions.
“We are proud to be contributing to the further acceleration of digital payment solutions in Europe,” he said.

Over the coming weeks, eligible customers of AIB, Bank of Ireland and PTSB will receive information about Zippay, including how to opt out if they choose. A dedicated website, www.Zippay.ie, has been launched with detailed information about the service.

Zippay is expected to become a key part of Ireland’s evolving digital payments landscape, offering a secure and seamless way for consumers to manage everyday transactions.
