Irish unicorn Workhuman hits 8m users

Dublin-born employee recognition business Workhuman sees rapid global adoption and more than $1bn a year spent in its rewards marketplace.

Workhuman has passed the milestone of eight million users worldwide as activity on its platform accelerates.

The company, which has operations in Dublin and Framington in the US, said it has facilitated more than 100 million moments of recognition to date, with employees sending a thank‑you message roughly every two seconds.

“Our goal has always been to make work more human, and it is inspiring to see that mission reach more than eight million people”

Founded in 1999 by Eric Mosley and Eddie Reynolds, and previously known as Globoforce, Workhuman operates employee reward and incentive schemes on behalf of some of the world’s biggest companies.

The business achieved unicorn status in 2021 when it was valued at more than $1bn.

Mosley, Workhuman’s chief executive, said the growth reflects both the scale of the company’s long‑running focus on peer‑to‑peer recognition and the emergence of artificial intelligence inside the platform.

“Our goal has always been to make work more human, and it is inspiring to see that mission reach more than eight million people,” he said. Mosley added that the expansion is part of the company’s shift toward becoming an AI‑driven recognition solution designed to support managers in making better people decisions and building stronger cultures.

Workhuman has built its business on the premise that regular, public appreciation improves workplace performance and retention.

Users can award colleagues points that are redeemable for merchandise, travel, or charitable giving. According to the company, organisations using the platform have reported a 54% rise in performance ratings among employees who received at least three awards, a fivefold improvement in new‑hire retention, and 66% lower turnover among those recognised at least three times a year.

The scale of Workhuman’s rewards system has positioned the company as a significant e‑commerce operator in its own right.

Employees redeem more than $1 billion a year in its global marketplace, which Workhuman owns and manages from end to end.

By its own benchmarks, the platform sits among the world’s 30 largest e‑commerce retailers, processing an order every two and a half seconds and delivering more than 12 million orders each year.

Sarah Whitman, a senior vice president at the company, said the design of the rewards experience is central to the impact of recognition itself.

“When someone redeems an award in our store, it is not just shopping. It is giving a gift to a loved one, enjoying a special night out, exploring a travel destination or trying something new,” she said. “Those moments make recognition joyful, meaningful and deeply personal. No other recognition platform offers this level of choice and personalisation today.”
