One-in-three Irish jobseekers check employers’ green credentials before applying, survey finds
More than a third (34%) of jobseekers in Ireland actively check a company’s environmental and sustainability credentials before applying for a role.
A new study from Matrix Recruitment as part of the firm’s first annual ESG Careers Report, based on a survey of more than 160 adults across the country highlights the growing importance of sustainability in career decision-making.
“Employers must embed sustainability into their culture, and not just talk about it, if they want to attract and retain talent”
Half of respondents said the presence of a sustainability policy influences their decision to accept a job offer.
Among younger professionals, 56% of those under 30 said they would ask potential employers about their sustainability goals during interviews.
Only 12% of respondents said they would reject a job offer outright if the company lacked a sustainability policy. However, 85% of those not currently in a green role said they would consider one in the future.
Key barriers include unclear job descriptions (29%) and a shortage of entry-level positions (28%).
Prioritising environmental values
Rena Weld, recruitment manager at Matrix Recruitment, said: “We’re seeing a clear shift in what today’s workforce expects. Younger candidates especially are prioritising environmental values and ESG commitments. Employers must embed sustainability into their culture, and not just talk about it, if they want to attract and retain talent.”
The report also found that 59% of professionals interested in green roles would prefer to upskill within their current company, while 45% were open to part-time college courses. Only 10% were willing to return to full-time education or take a pay cut.
Other findings include strong interest in sectors such as renewable energy, the circular economy, biodiversity, and climate policy.
Respondents also identified climate tech, AI and sustainability data, and ESG regulation as key growth areas over the next five years.
