Zippay set to reshape Irish peer-to-peer payments

Major Irish banks introduce in app payment tool developed with European paytech Nexi.

A new mobile payment service, Zippay, is being launched this week by Bank of Ireland, AIB and PTSB, marking a significant step in Ireland’s push toward faster, simpler person‑to‑person digital payments.

The tool will appear directly within customers’ existing mobile banking apps and is expected to reach more than 5 million eligible accounts as it rolls out on a phased basis from Tuesday.

“Zippay will provide a quick and easy way to send and receive money or split payments or bills with friends, family and contacts who are also Zippay users”

Zippay allows users to send, request and split payments instantly by selecting contacts in their phonebook who are also registered for the service. Daily transfers of up to €1,000 will be supported, and customers will be able to request up to €500 per transaction.

The platform has been developed in partnership with Nexi, one of Europe’s largest payment technology companies, and will be offered to all financial institutions that provide IBAN account services and a consumer banking app.

Brian Hayes, chief executive of Banking and Payments Federation Ireland, said the introduction of Zippay would give customers a more convenient way to handle everyday transactions.

“Zippay will provide a quick and easy way to send and receive money or split payments or bills with friends, family and contacts who are also Zippay users,” he said. “Eligible customers will begin to see Zippay appear automatically in their personal banking apps on a phased basis from tomorrow.”

Hayes said that one of the most practical advantages for users is that the service is fully embedded within their existing banking app.

“A key benefit is that it comes with all the same high levels of security, protection and digital safety,” he said.

“This avoids the need for topping up a digital wallet or downloading and using a separate app. Zippay will use mobile numbers saved within customers’ contact lists to identify who else uses the service, making it seamless to transfer money without needing to set up new payees or know their IBAN, BIC or account numbers. It promises to be a simple, speedy and secure experience.”

Nexi, which has an established presence in the Irish banking sector, is managing the technical delivery and future expansion of the service. Renato Martini, digital banking solutions director at Nexi Group, said Zippay’s launch in Ireland highlights the company’s role in accelerating digital payments across Europe.

“We are delighted to be working with the Irish retail banks to deliver Zippay and are proud to be contributing to the further acceleration of digital payment solutions in Europe,” he said. “Built on an API‑based architecture, Zippay is designed for scalability and future growth. Nexi will manage the integration of eligible financial institutions wishing to join the service.”

Information for customers will be issued by each bank through in‑app notifications and email during the rollout. A dedicated website, Zippay.ie, explains how the service works, with AIB, Bank of Ireland and PTSB also hosting their own detailed guidance pages.

The launch forms part of a broader industry effort, led by Banking and Payments Federation Ireland, to modernise Ireland’s consumer payments infrastructure while ensuring that security and regulatory compliance remain central to new digital tools.
