New digital era begins as 5Gbps broadband goes live in Ireland

As Virgin Media reaches 550,000 fibre home milestone, a new chapter begins in Ireland’s broadband story.

Virgin Media has reached a major milestone in its nationwide fibre upgrade programme, with over 550,000 homes now connected to its fibre network.

The company says it remains on track to reach its target of upgrading 1m premises to fibre by 2026.

“It’s about more than just broadband speed – it’s about empowering communities, supporting local economies, and laying the foundation for a truly digital Ireland”

In conjunction with this announcement, Virgin Media has launched Ireland’s first 5Gbps fibre broadband service, which is immediately available to customers across its upgraded network.

Making Ireland a digital leader

The accelerated rollout represents a significant step in the company’s commitment to enhancing Ireland’s digital infrastructure and providing consumers with faster, more reliable internet connectivity.

“This fibre milestone reflects our continued investment in Ireland’s digital infrastructure,” said Tony Hanway, CEO of Virgin Media.

“We are now more than halfway through our fibre upgrade programme but it’s about more than just broadband speed – it’s about empowering communities, supporting local economies, and laying the foundation for a truly digital Ireland.

“Our next-generation fibre network and the launch of our new 5Gbps broadband delivers enhanced connectivity, greater competition and more choice for consumers.”

Virgin said its fibre upgrade programme is part of a broader strategy to position Ireland as a digital leader, with infrastructure capable of supporting future technological innovations and growing bandwidth demands.
