First MSc cohort completes pioneering programme with two years of industry experience and direct pathways into leading technology firms.
The first cohort of Master’s students has graduated from the University of Limerick’s pioneering Immersive Software Engineering (ISE) programme, marking a significant milestone for one of Ireland’s most closely watched innovations in higher education.
For Ireland’s technology sector, the graduation of the programme’s first MSc class represents the arrival of a new group of software engineers whose education has been shaped as much by practical experience as academic instruction, reflecting a growing emphasis on industry-ready talent in an increasingly competitive global technology market.

The 16 MSc graduates are set to begin careers with a range of leading Irish and international employers, including Stripe, Fin (formerly Intercom), Analog Devices, Shannonside Capital and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Established in 2022, the ISE programme was designed to rethink how software engineering is taught by embedding students in real-world development environments from the outset. Instead of relying primarily on lectures, the programme combines academic study with extensive paid industry residencies, giving students hands-on experience throughout their degree.
The changing nature of tech learning
Since its launch, the programme has expanded rapidly and now accommodates around 60 students annually. According to UL, demand has risen steadily, with entry requirements reaching levels comparable to some of the university’s most competitive courses.
A key feature of the programme is its close collaboration with industry. Students undertake five long-term paid residencies with partner organisations, spending approximately half of the course working on live commercial, public sector and research projects.
The programme’s partner network includes multinational technology and pharmaceutical companies such as OpenAI, Qualcomm, Susquehanna, Eli Lilly and Deloitte, alongside Irish firms including Manna Aero, Provizio, Tines, ProtexAI and Mbryonics. Public sector partners include the Departments of Justice and Enterprise, Tourism, and Employment.
Since 2022, ISE has worked with more than 70 organisations, including four of Ireland’s nine unicorn companies.
Students have contributed to projects spanning healthcare, cybersecurity, home protection systems and advanced battery technologies. Among the initiatives developed through the programme are an early detection and intervention tool for cerebral palsy in infants and wireless battery management systems that have progressed into production environments.
The programme also offers entrepreneurial opportunities through a partnership with Dogpatch Labs, allowing students to explore the development of their own ventures while completing their studies.
Academic success has accompanied the industry engagement. ISE students have secured prestigious scholarships and awards, including Naughton and Google scholarships. The programme also benefits from six dedicated industry-funded scholarships. Two of this year’s graduates achieved the highest grades across UL’s wider Faculty of Science and Engineering.
Stripe has been involved with the initiative since its inception, helping to develop both the curriculum and residency placement model while serving as a founding industry partner.
Be ‘radically’ different
Professor Stephen Kinsella, Co-Director of UL’s Immersive Software Engineering Programme, said the first graduation demonstrates the programme’s original vision in practice.
“We launched the ISE programme with an ambition. We wanted to prove that a radically different model of software engineering education built on real-world complexity rather than the traditional lecture hall would produce graduates able to operate at the highest level of the software industry. Today, we’re seeing the results of that ambition realised. Our students are stepping into roles with some of the country’s most innovative companies. We’re excited for, and proud of, each of them, and can’t wait to see how they progress as the future of Ireland’s tech ecosystem.”

The programme builds on UL’s long-established emphasis on work-integrated learning. The university was an early pioneer of cooperative education in Ireland, introducing its co-op model in 1974.
ISE extends that tradition by placing industry engagement at the centre of a software engineering curriculum designed to keep pace with rapidly evolving employer needs.
