Sligo-founded edtech platform serving 224,000 students and 29,000 teachers becomes fifth organisation in expanding education consortium.
Studyclix, the company behind Ireland’s most widely used second-level teaching and learning platform, is joining the Axis Education Group in a move aimed at supporting the next phase of its growth and development.
Founded in Sligo in 2009 by former secondary school teacher Luke Saunders and software developer Keith Wright, Studyclix is used regularly by 224,000 second-level students and 29,000 teachers and is available in more than 700 schools across Ireland.
“To maintain our position as Ireland’s most popular second-level teaching and learning tool, and to achieve our growth ambitions, we must keep improving our offering”
The agreement will see Studyclix become the fifth organisation within the Axis Education Group, joining Independent College, International House Dublin, Dublin Academy of Education and Public Affairs Ireland.
Axis Education Group, led by CEO Chris Lauder and education and technology investor Donagh Barry, provides undergraduate and postgraduate education programmes, language courses and professional development training across its businesses and serves more than 20,000 students.
The business of education
Studyclix has grown from a secondary school study aid into a comprehensive teaching and learning platform, providing access to study tools, past examination papers, mock exam questions and Boost video tutorials that align directly with the Department of Education curriculum.
The company operates through both direct student and parent subscriptions and school-wide licensing agreements. Alongside its operations in Sligo and Dublin, Studyclix has expanded internationally with offices in Melbourne and Cape Town following launches in Australia and South Africa.
Luke Saunders, co-founder and CEO of Studyclix, said the deal marks an important step in the company’s development while allowing it to continue operating independently.
“We started Studyclix in 2009 after I saw from my work as a science and maths teacher that students and teachers needed a better way to access curriculum-based learning and examination resources. While the growth of the company since then has been remarkable, we realise that to maintain our position as Ireland’s most popular second-level teaching and learning tool, and to achieve our growth ambitions, we must keep improving our offering.”
Saunders said becoming part of Axis Education Group would provide additional capacity to support product and content development.
“The agreement to join Axis Education Group is a major milestone in our business journey, providing us with the additional expertise and capacity needed to continue producing engaging and effective content for students and teachers. Importantly, it also allows us to retain our autonomy so that we can continue operating as usual.”
He added: “We look forward to working with Axis Education Group as we expand and deepen our platform, strengthen our partnerships with schools and continue improving the experience we provide for students, teachers and parents.”
Chris Lauder, CEO of Axis Education Group, said Studyclix is a strong addition to the group’s growing education portfolio.
“We are delighted to welcome the team at Studyclix to the Axis Education Group. Studyclix is an ideal investment for us as we expand our portfolio of education businesses, and together deliver our shared mission of empowering students and building the confidence, critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary for success in second-level, third-level and beyond.”
Lauder said the group intends to support the business as it continues to grow its platform and product offering.
“We look forward to supporting Luke and Keith on the next stage of their journey with the capacity and resources to deliver new content and cutting-edge products to ensure the continued growth and success of the business.”
