Shannon Airport welcomed more than one million summer passengers as traffic rose 11.5%, driven by new routes, transatlantic demand and tourism growth.
Shannon Airport has passed the one million passenger mark for the busy summer period, with more than one million travellers using the airport between May and August as passenger traffic increased by 11.5% compared with the same period in 2025.
The milestone comes amid a year of significant expansion for the airport, which added five new routes in 2026 to Warsaw, Madrid, Rome, Poznań and Frankfurt.

Passengers had access to 40 routes across the network this year, including five daily transatlantic services during the peak summer season. Popular European destinations included Barcelona, Faro, Málaga and Alicante, while London, Manchester, New York, Boston and Chicago continued to provide key links to the UK and US markets.
The strong summer performance follows a sustained period of growth for Shannon Airport. The airport was named Ireland’s fastest-growing major airport for three consecutive months in May, June and July, according to the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation (ITIC).
It also builds on momentum from the first half of 2026, when passenger numbers at Shannon increased by 12% compared with the same period last year.

“Summer at Shannon was about much more than outbound travel. We welcomed thousands of overseas visitors coming to experience the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland’s world-renowned golf courses, as well as sports fans travelling to and from major events in Ireland and the United States.
“Our team worked tirelessly throughout the busy summer period to give passengers the easy, hassle-free journey they expect from Shannon. We are now focused on carrying that momentum into winter while continuing our investment in the terminal and overall passenger experience.”
The airport is also preparing for the winter travel season with enhanced passenger screening measures now in place. Travellers can bring liquids, aerosols and gels in containers of up to two litres in their hand luggage, replacing the previous 100ml restriction.
The change is expected to improve the passenger experience as Shannon continues to invest in infrastructure and customer service while building on its strong growth trajectory.
