National Broadband Ireland to launch 5Gbps broadband service in October.
National Broadband Ireland (NBI) plans to launch a 5Gbps fibre broadband product to premises within the National Broadband Plan (NBP) rollout area.
This will bring ultra-fast connectivity to homes and businesses across rural Ireland.
“From farmers using precision agriculture to students accessing virtual classrooms, this offering will help redefine what’s possible for every home, school, farm, business and indeed community in our rollout area”
The new product will more than double NBI’s current top speed offering, which ranges from 500Mbpsto 2Gbps.
Getting Ireland connected
The 5Gbps service will be available through more than 50 broadband providers operating on the NBI network.
The product will feature differentiated upload speeds tailored to user needs. Residential customers will have access to a 5Gbps download and 250Mbps upload service, while business users, including small and medium-sized enterprises, will benefit from a 5Gbps download and 500Mbps upload option.
T.J. Malone, chief executive Officer of NBI, said the new service is designed to support a wide range of applications and sectors.
“NBI’s 5Gbps service isn’t just about speed, it’s about unlocking potential of virtually every sector in the country,” Malone explained. “From farmers using precision agriculture to students accessing virtual classrooms, this offering will help redefine what’s possible for every home, school, farm, business and indeed community in our rollout area,” he said.
The service is expected to support a wide range of high-demand online activities, including 4K and 8K streaming, online gaming, large data transfers, remote work, cloud services, and smart device integration.
Eligibility for the service can be checked by entering an Eircode on the NBI website.
Joe Lavin, chief commercial officer of NBI, highlighted the growing demand for high-capacity broadband.
“When you look at consumer trends, whether that be smart TV adoption, 4K or higher broadcasting, the proliferation of connected home devices, as well as in-home IoT medical care applications, it’s easy to understand why data usage is increasing. In response to those trends and to support our customers – broadband providers – in delivering an even better experience for users on the NBI Network, we’re excited to make our 5Gbps product available in the market,” Lavin said.
