Kilshane Energy signs €300m turbine deal with Ansaldo Energia for North Dublin power station.
Kilshane Energy has signed a contract with Italian manufacturer Ansaldo Energia to supply a 300 megawatt (MW) open-cycle gas turbine for its new €300 million power station in North Dublin.
The project, which received planning approval in May 2024, is scheduled for commissioning in 2028 and is designed to support Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon energy system.
“As Ireland moves towards a net zero energy system, we need reliable back-up generation to complement growing renewable resources”
The turbine, an AE94.3A model, will be delivered in time for the plant’s launch and will provide fast-responding, flexible capacity to the national grid. The station is intended to stabilise the grid during periods of peak demand and low renewable output, complementing Ireland’s growing reliance on wind and solar energy.
Ireland’s energy transition
Brian McMullan, Project Lead at Kilshane Energy, said the plant would play a critical role in Ireland’s energy transition.
“This project is about resilience and flexibility. As Ireland moves towards a net zero energy system, we need reliable back-up generation to complement growing renewable resources. The technology from Ansaldo Energia is not only flexible and robust, but it also offers a future pathway to decarbonisation, with the potential for hydrogen blending and other low-carbon fuels.”
Kilshane Energy is part of LCC Group, one of Ireland’s largest domestically owned energy companies, which also owns Go Fuels and Go Power. The new power station marks LCC Group’s expansion into electricity generation, complementing its existing supply business.
Michael Loughran, chair of LCC Group, said the project reflects a strategic shift in the company’s energy portfolio.
“This collaboration between Kilshane Energy and Ansaldo Energia marks a strategic move by LCC Group to complement our existing supply business, Go Power, by contributing to the generation side of the market. Together, these businesses form a stronger, more integrated approach to supporting Ireland’s transition to net zero while always having security of supply.”
Ansaldo Energia’s AE94.3A turbine has been deployed in more than 125 units globally, accumulating over five million equivalent operating hours. The company said the technology is well suited to Ireland’s evolving energy needs.
“We are proud to play a role in this strategic project and sincerely thank Kilshane Energy for placing their trust in our technology and know-how,” said Stefano Gianatti, Executive Vice President Thermal New Units at Ansaldo Energia.
“The AE94.3A gas turbine continues to prove its value in today’s rapidly evolving energy landscape. With its best-in-class flexibility and reliability, it is ideally suited to support Ireland’s energy security while advancing the country’s decarbonisation goals.”
Construction of the power station is expected to begin in 2026.
