As the May Bank Holiday weekend is one of the busiest times of the year for the gardening sector, here are some of the best Irish gardening centres and websites to visit.
According to the most recent figures in a Bord Bia report, consumers spent €1.5bn on garden-related products and services, exceeding the previous high reported during the Celtic Tiger era.
The term plant parents has emerged to describe the popularity of indoor potted plants in recent years. While traditionally favoured by an older demographic, this study shows a significant increase in indoor plant purchases among younger people. Spending on indoor plants has increased by 38% since 2020, bringing the market value to €51m.
According to the Horticulture Industry Forum, approximately 6,000 people are employed full-time in primary production within the horticulture sector, with an additional 10,000 employed in downstream businesses.
The sector is considered important for rural employment, economic diversification, and environmental sustainability. It is also noted for its gender diversity compared to the more male-dominated farming sector. However, the horticulture sector faces significant challenges, including competition from overseas, inflation, tariffs, weather events, and industry consolidation.
The Arboretum
Arboretum is an award-winning garden centre and lifestyle retailer. Founded in rural County Carlow in 1977 by horticulturist Rachel Doyle, this family business now boasts a €14 million turnover and employs 200 people across three locations: its flagship store on 10 acres in Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow, Arboretum Kilquade in Co. Wicklow, and Arboretum Urban Green in Dublin city center.
Today, Rachel’s sons lead the company, with Barry Doyle as CEO and Fergal Doyle as CCO. Rachel Doyle remains a director and also serves as Executive Chair.
The Doyles recently completed a €4.5 million redevelopment of their 2,400 m² garden centre in Kilquade, County Wicklow. Situated on the site of the National Garden Exhibition Centre, the new state-of-the-art store features a covered plant area and expanded retail space, offering indoor plants, fashion, gifts, and health and wellness products for the first time.
Arboretum creates destination garden and lifestyle centres known for their wide selection of plants, including specimen plants and trees, as well as gardening tools, seeds, bulbs, treatments, garden furniture, and Weber barbecues. The business has always emphasized excellent customer service. Arboretum Urban Green offers a slightly different brand experience, targeting city centre gardeners. It opened in May 2023 on the first floor of Chapter’s bookshop on Parnell Street, Dublin.
Each store has a high-quality in-house restaurant, which is something founder Rachel Doyle felt strongly about, and food accounts for 30% of the turnover.
E-commerce is an important part of the business model with the company investing recently in a fulfilment centre in Leighlinbridge to service orders received on www.arboretum.ie
Taking advantage of the redevelopment of Arboretum Kilquade, the Doyles have embedded sustainable technology in the site such as rainwater harvesting and solar-panel-generated electricity for heat and light. They were justifiably proud when Arboretum was named Retail Excellence Ireland Sustainable Retailer of the Year in 2024/25.

Wolfgang Reforest
Wolfgang Reforest is a social enterprise dedicated to restoring Ireland’s ancient woodlands and combating climate change through reforestation. Founded by Wolfgang Digital’s CEO Alan Coleman in 2017, the initiative was inspired by the ecological devastation of Ireland’s forests, which were heavily deforested under British colonial rule. Wolfgang Reforest contributes 1% of its revenues to reforestation efforts and has raised substantial funds from public support, including €200,000 through its “Gift Trees Not Things” campaign. The organisation’s first project began with the acquisition of 15 acres near Aughrim in County Wicklow, part of the historic Tinahely oak woods. Using acorns sourced from Tomnafinnoge Woods, Wolfgang plants certified native Irish trees using the Miyawaki Method, which promotes faster growth and greater biodiversity. This approach has seen trees grow up to six feet in their first year, revitalising wildlife habitats and enriching local ecosystems.
The organisation’s vision extends beyond planting trees; it aims to double the footprint of Tomnafinnoge Woods and eventually reintroduce wolves to Ireland as part of a broader ecological restoration plan. Wolfgang Reforest has expanded its landholdings to 51 acres, enabling significant progress in restoring native woodlands. All proceeds from its initiatives are reinvested into acquiring more land and planting additional trees, ensuring sustained growth. By engaging individuals and companies through tree gifting and monthly subscriptions, Wolfgang Reforest fosters community involvement in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. Its efforts exemplify how reforestation can reverse environmental degradation while preserving Ireland’s natural heritage for future generations.
I can personally recommend that they make great gifts for those ‘difficult to find anything for people’ at Christmas or Birthdays!
