Flogas and Ørsted partner to deliver wind energy from Knockawarriga to Irish businesses via flexible CPPAs, supporting net-zero goals and energy independence.
Flogas has struck new partnership with Ørsted Onshore Ireland to supply renewable electricity from the Knockawarriga wind farm in County Limerick to over 20 medium and large-sized Irish businesses.
The initiative is part of Flogas’ multi-buyer Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) model, which aims to make renewable energy more accessible to domestic enterprises.
“Businesses can decarbonise their energy consumption in a stable, predictable and cost-competitive manner”
The Knockawarriga wind farm has been operational since 2008 and has helped avoid over 33,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
A wind-win situation
Under the CPPA model, businesses can purchase flexible energy volumes tailored to their needs, without committing to the full output of the wind farm. This flexibility allows contract terms to align with existing energy agreements.
“This initiative reflects Flogas’ vision of democratising CPPAs, making renewable energy purchase agreements accessible beyond just the largest corporations,” explained John Rooney, managing director at Flogas Ireland. “Businesses can decarbonise their energy consumption in a stable, predictable and cost-competitive manner.”
The Government’s Climate Action Plan targets 15% of electricity consumption to come from renewable electricity contracted under CPPAs by 2030. Flogas’ model demonstrates that CPPAs are not limited to multinationals and that Irish businesses can participate in responsible energy procurement.
TJ Hunter, vice president Onshore Ireland UK at Ørsted, said “We are proud of our community footprint at Knockawarriga and are delighted that the energy will be made available to support large and medium-sized Irish businesses. Wind farms such as Knockawarriga play a crucial role in Ireland’s energy system.”
The first six businesses to join the programme include companies from financial services, insurance, manufacturing, hospitality and food production sectors, such as Walsh Mushrooms Group and Allianz Worldwide Care.
Seamus Reilly, facilities manager at Allianz Worldwide Care, commented: “This partnership empowers us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint while continuing to provide trusted, high-quality service.”
Padraic O’Leary, CEO of Walsh Mushrooms Group, added: “Fresh and sustainable mushroom production is central to our mission. This initiative aligns perfectly with our values and resonates deeply with our customers.”
