Egis has been awarded a new contract to operate and maintain the Dublin Tunnel, the Jack Lynch Tunnel in Cork, and monitor 1,200km of Ireland’s motorways 24/7.
The eight-year contract with Egis Ireland, announced by Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, TD, which can be extended for another eight years, was awarded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) following a competitive tender process.
If extended to the full 16 years, the contract could reach a potential value of €600m excluding VAT.
“We have been stewards of the Dublin Tunnel since 2006 and we are acutely aware of the need to ensure it operates and is maintained to the highest standards”
“The Dublin Tunnel, Jack Lynch Tunnel and the country’s motorway network are critical pieces of national infrastructure that contribute to improved road safety and Ireland’s economic growth and competitiveness,” said Minister Darragh O’Brien.
“Egis and TII have worked together to identify and implement upgrades to improve operations and reduce emissions.”
Scope of operations
Under the new agreement, Egis Road & Tunnel Operations (ERTO) will be responsible for the full operational management of three critical national infrastructure assets:
- Operating and maintaining the Dublin Tunnel, including tolling operations and revenue management
- Operating and maintaining the Jack Lynch Tunnel in Cork
- Running the Motorway Operations Control Centre, which monitors approximately 1,200km of motorway nationwide
The company will also oversee routine and reactive maintenance, fire safety compliance, and the operation of electrical, drainage, ventilation, and lighting systems in both tunnels.
From the Dublin-based Motorway Operations Control Centre (MOCC), Egis staff will monitor Ireland’s motorway network, coordinate incident responses, manage the country’s 1,600 emergency roadside telephones, and control variable message signs that provide real-time information to road users.
“We are delighted to have won the contract to operate, maintain and oversee these vital pieces of national infrastructure,” said Steve Preece, CEO of Egis in Ireland.
“We have been stewards of the Dublin Tunnel since 2006 and we are acutely aware of the need to ensure it operates and is maintained to the highest standards.”
Sustainability commitments
As part of the contract, Egis will align with TII’s Sustainability Implementation Plan, sourcing 100% of operational energy from renewable sources from day one and working toward transitioning the infrastructure to net zero.
The company has already implemented significant sustainability measures, including replacing 1,800 light bulbs with LEDs in the Dublin Tunnel in 2022, resulting in a 60% reduction in light-related energy usage.
Recent technological upgrades include a new tolling system using laser technology and number plate recognition to improve traffic flow, and a replacement of the tunnel’s SCADA system to enhance automation of functions such as temperature management.
Pat Maher, Director of Network Management TII, added: “We congratulate Egis in Ireland on this contact award and look forward to working with them over the next eight years. Egis has proved to be an effective partner for TII and shares our commitment to operating and maintaining a safe and efficient national road network to the highest-quality and sustainability standard.”
