Charter Medical Group invests €50m in Mullingar hospital expansion, adding theatres, beds, and 300 jobs to boost healthcare access in the Midlands.
Charter Medical Group will invest €50 million in its private hospital in Mullingar as part of a two-year capital programme aimed at expanding healthcare capacity in the Midlands.
The announcement was made today by Peter Burke, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
“This investment is a huge vote of confidence in Mullingar as a hub for advanced healthcare and will greatly improve patient access to surgical and diagnostic services”
The investment, which begins in January 2026, will fund new operating theatres, endoscopy suites and additional surgical and medical beds at the Ballinderry campus.
The project is expected to create 200 jobs over the next two years, with a further 100 roles planned for 2027. The hospital currently employs more than 300 staff.
World class care
“This investment is a huge vote of confidence in Mullingar as a hub for advanced healthcare and will greatly improve patient access to surgical and diagnostic services,” Burke said. “Around 200 jobs will be created, further positioning Mullingar as a centre for high-value employment in the healthcare sector.”
Charter Medical Group operates facilities in Smithfield, Dublin, and Mullingar, and works closely with the Health Service Executive and the National Treatment Purchase Fund to reduce waiting lists. Paula Gray, chief executive of Charter Medical Private Hospital Mullingar, said the expansion would strengthen partnerships with public health bodies and insurance providers.
“Our commitment is to deliver world-class care closer to home for patients across the Midlands and beyond,” Gray said. “This investment will enhance both our surgical and in-patient capacity and create better access to critically needed services nationally.”
The hospital treats a significant proportion of public patients and aims to provide equal access to care without long delays. Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill recently visited the facility for an operational briefing.
