ALDI Invests €14m in Irish strawberries through extended partnership with Dublin’s Sunglow Nurseries.
ALDI Ireland has confirmed a new five-year contract extension worth €14m with Dublin-based Sunglow Nurseries.
The deal strengthens their 17-year partnership for supplying premium Bord Bia quality-assured Irish strawberries across all 163 ALDI stores nationwide.
“Working with ALDI has been central to our success and has supported us in continuing to deliver high-quality produce to Irish customers and the security to invest in our business”
The significant investment comes as this season’s first Irish strawberries arrive on ALDI shelves.
Sunglow Nurseries, which has been an ALDI supplier since 2008, will continue to provide 95% of their produce to the retailer, with the remaining 5% going to small local businesses.
Based in Rush, Co. Dublin, Sunglow is a family-run business managed by brothers John, Billy, and Joe McGuinness. The company employs 10 full-time and 30 part-time staff at their North Dublin nursery, where they grow 100% Bord Bia certified strawberries using sustainable practices.
Minister for Agriculture, Food and The Marine Martin Heydon, TD, welcomed the agreement: “Backing Irish growers is vital to the ongoing success of our agri-food industry, and it is encouraging to see ALDI maintaining and developing its commitment to supporting Irish businesses.”
Supporting Irish agriculture and horticulture
Sunglow’s Joe McGuinness says the partnership has been instrumental in the business’s growth.
“Working with ALDI has been central to our success and has supported us in continuing to deliver high-quality produce to Irish customers and the security to invest in our business. We are delighted with the extension of our partnership and look forward to growing and developing our business and working with ALDI for the next five years and beyond.”
The partnership also highlights ALDI’s commitment to quality assurance standards.
Gerard McLoughlin, Buying Director at ALDI Ireland, emphasised the retailer’s dedication to Irish suppliers. “Sunglow have been providing ALDI customers with their delicious Bord Bia Quality-Assured Irish strawberries for the last 17 years and we look forward to continuing to supply our customers with the highest quality Irish produce from Sunglow for years to come.”
Emer Gallaher Hall, Senior Manager for Horticulture at Bord Bia, also commented: “We are delighted with ALDI’s commitment to carrying Bord Bia quality assured produce in their stores and wish both ALDI and Sunglow the best in their continued partnership. By choosing products with the Bord Bia quality mark, ALDI consumers are supporting local growers who are committed to the highest standards.”
