A national AI upskilling initiative by Google and Bank of Ireland shows SMEs how to bypass complex spreadsheets and use intuitive models to forecast commercial trends.
For decades, the standard operating toolkit of the independent business owner has been anchored by the spreadsheet. From retail inventory logs to farm yield records, columns of numbers have served as the ultimate record of truth.
Yet, for many small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs), these tables are less a source of strategic insight and more a digital graveyard – massive volumes of data are collected diligently week after week, but there is rarely enough time, or specialised analytical staff, to extract real meaning from them.
“Smaller firms are often forced to run their operations looking in the rearview mirror, reacting to cash flow or supply issues only after they hit the balance sheet”
The financial cost of this information logjam is significant. While multinational corporations employ dedicated data science departments to spot shifting market dynamics early, smaller firms are often forced to run their operations looking in the rearview mirror, reacting to cash flow or supply issues only after they hit the balance sheet.

Free upskilling for SMEs
A newly launched national training campaign is designed to break this bottleneck. Through a partnership between Google and Bank of Ireland, Irish SMEs are being offered free access to a structured upskilling program designed to demystify data analytics.
Up to 10,000 fully funded scholarships for the Google AI Professional Certificate are currently available to Irish SMEs and their workforces at zero cost.
By teaching lean teams how to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) directly into the everyday tools they already use, the initiative aims to turn messy, unstructured operational logs into an engine for faster, evidence-based business decisions.
The shift to active analytical insights
At the heart of this push is a core course within the Google AI Professional Certificate titled “AI for Data Analysis”.
For the average manager, the term “data analytics” suggests a high barrier to entry –complex database languages, advanced statistics, and specialised software code. The modern approach completely turns that assumption on its head.
The Google AI Professional Certificate training bypasses theoretical computing to focus heavily on practical workplace execution. Instead of forcing users to learn complex code, the curriculum trains them to use Google’s Gemini AI platform directly within standard platforms like Google Sheets.
By using natural language queries rather than manual formula building, a business owner or employee can command the system to clean up unstructured data pools, identify hidden operational correlations, and instantly generate clear visualisations.
This capability bridges the gap between raw data collection and strategic execution, allowing a non-technical manager to query their business performance as easily as asking a question of a colleague.
From chaotic fields to predictive supply chains: McNally Family Farm case study
The practical dividend of this modern approach to numbers is already transforming operations on the ground. On McNally Family Farm, a highly respected organic agricultural business in North Dublin, managing rapid commercial expansion brought a classic data challenge.
“By helping us to understand our business better, Gemini gives us knowledge to plan what’s next”
Initially focused on supplying supermarkets, the farm diversified heavily over the years, opening a bustling farm shop and a small cafe, alongside growing over 50 varieties of organic vegetables.
During the pandemic the business introduced click and collect.
But while sales skyrocketed, the rapid diversification left a critical administrative gap, explained Niamh McNally, farm manager.
“Rapid growth exposed a real gap. We were busy and taking on staff, yet had no clear picture of what was driving the business. The till gave us raw data but we weren’t doing anything with it.”
Niamh’s husband Alex comes from a retail background. “We both knew that if we wanted to continue to thrive, we needed more than passion – we needed to get a handle on the commercial side of things. So Alex undertook a course to learn more about AI.
“He started feeding our sales data into Gemini and suddenly we had clear, readable reports – what was selling, what wasn’t, what people bought at different times of the year. For the first time, we truly understood our business.
McNally said this data helped the owners to see the patterns in sales that were previously hidden in spreadsheets, allowing them to plan crops with much greater confidence.
“Since then, Gemini has become central to how we operate and grow – from launching guided farm tours to planning our next expansion. In farming, standing still isn’t an option and with Gemini, we don’t have to.”
Inside the Under-10-Hour Data Masterclass
The transition from a passive data collector to an analytical strategist sounds like a significant multi-month commitment, but the curriculum in the Google AI Professional Certificate is engineered specifically for active workforces:
- Zero Financial Barrier: Funded entirely through the “Grow with Google” mission, the full professional certificate is open to Irish SMEs and their workforces at no cost.
- Bite-Sized Modular Learning: The programme is comprised of seven practical courses designed to be completed at your own pace online via Coursera, requiring an aggregate commitment of under 10 hours total.
- A Real-World Portfolio: Rather than enduring abstract video lectures, participants complete over 20 hands-on, graded activities. Employees finish the training with a tangible portfolio of data models and workflows they have built themselves.
- Premium Infrastructure Provided: To ensure companies can implement these insights smoothly, the scholarship provides each learner with a three-month extended trial of Google AI Pro at no cost, allowing teams to utilise advanced models built directly into Google Workspace.
