Ireland’s golf boom: The SMEs driving a €1bn+ industry forward

Barry Walsh highlights the Irish SMEs transforming golf through innovation, fashion, tech and accessibility, powering a booming €1bn+ industry ahead of the 2027 Ryder Cup.

With the US Masters set to ignite the global golfing spotlight this April and Ireland preparing to host the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor next year, Irish golfing SMEs are standing on the cusp of an unprecedented wave of opportunity.

The Irish golf market is one of the most valuable markets in all of sport.

According to RTE, golf contributes €717 million annually in direct economic value, and it supports over 15,600 jobs across Ireland.

Consumer spending on golf reaches €703 million, with club memberships alone accounting for €143 million.

Golf Ireland’s 2025 report claims: “Participation is booming, and women are now making up 20% of memberships, and junior participation is jumping 25% year-on-year. Approximately 10% of Irish adults now play golf, though only one third hold club memberships.”

According to Tourism Ireland golf tourism adds a further €300 million to the economy annually, with over 220,000 international visitors arriving each year, spending three times more than the average leisure tourist across Ireland’s 400+ courses.

And this is before you account for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, which is projected to deliver even greater returns.

In this article, I wanted to focus on the SME in Ireland, where entrepreneurs have launched their own businesses dedicated to promoting the sport, making the sport more accessible and reducing the inherent bias that golf is only for older men. This article features businesses that are making golf more affordable and more inclusive through women’s fashion and building on the technological and coaching expertise that Ireland has.

AWGO Golf

AWGO golf logo.

AWGO Golf is a female golf fashion brand launched in 2023 by Irish founders Shauna McIntyre and Stephanie Glennon. They were driven by a shared frustration with the lack of stylish, functional options available to female golfers as they say themselves: “We created this brand because we felt like no brand represented women like us. We remembered playing golf in our teens and being embarrassed going to golf in our mother’s clothes.”

They set out to build a brand that would resonate with a younger generation of women on the course. The brand’s namewas chosen to be short, memorable, and free from any preconceived associations with golf. Their logo, a woman with a ponytail, was inspired by the nickname given to them by older members at their golf club.

AWGO Golf’s mission is to empower women and foster a sense of community within the golfing world, redefining traditional notions of women’s golf attire with a fresh, inclusive perspective.

Their collection includes golf polos and skorts designed for both comfort and style, featuring high-waisted silhouettes, stretchy fabrics, and practical pockets built for on-course use. The brand has been exhibited at the Irish Golf Show, with ambitions to reach women golfers across Ireland, UK, Europe and the UAE. The brand has been featured in the the Irish Independent and Irish Golfer magazine.

Bold Golf

Group of young people in front of a graffiti wall.

BOLD Golf is a Dublin-born golf brand founded by Jonathan O’Driscoll, Dervla Malone and brothers Jack and Robbie Pierse, who met while some of them were working at PWC Ireland.

Other investors now include Shane Lowry as a founding investor – and key figures like Jim Pallotta (Raptor Group) and Dan Robertson (Golf Digest). The brand was created on the belief that traditional golf gear had grown stale, safe, and out of step with where the sport is heading. The founders grew up on the course but found the clothing and equipment soulless and not suited to a new generation of players.

Rather than abandon the game’s heritage, they set out to honour what they loved about golf while leaving its outdated aesthetic behind, without breaking the rules but thoughtfully rewriting them with far more style and intention.

The brand’s philosophy is best captured in its product design approach: familiar silhouettes and classic references, rebuilt with better materials and a modern point of view. Their Sunday Bags, for instance, draw inspiration from minimal, unstructured golf bags of fifty years ago, but are reimagined in premium Italian leather with touches suited to both the course and city life. Designed in Dublin in collaboration with artists and designers who treat the course as a canvas, BOLD Golf positions itself as a new kind of golf brand — inspired by tradition yet built for now. They have been featured on PwC Ireland’s website, Scratch Ireland, The Sunday Business Post and Irish Golfer magazine.

Boyd Golf

Boyd Golf has been in business for over 30 years and is Ireland’s number one on-course golf accessory manufacturer. Based in Bangor, Northern Ireland, the company has built a strong reputation as a trusted supplier to golf clubs and greenkeeping professionals across Ireland, the UK, and Europe.

Boyd Golf designs, manufactures, and supplies one of the largest ranges of on-course accessories available, positioning itself as a one-stop shop for golf course management and maintenance. Their tagline, “The Professional’s Choice,” reflects the confidence the industry has placed in them over three decades of consistent service.

The company’s product catalogue has everything a golf club or greenkeeper might need to maintain and present a course to the highest standard. Offerings include tee markers, flag pins, hole cutters, hole cups, course signage, rakes, ball washers, shoe cleaners, seats and benches, drag mats, and specialist greenkeeping tools. They also cater to driving ranges and supply winter tee mats, demonstrating their broad understanding of the operational needs of golf facilities year-round. They were featured last year in The Golf Industry Magazine when the company president, Mark Boyd, retired after 33 years running the company.

ForeGolf

ForeGolf’s story began in 1997 when founder Derek Murray opened a golf shop in Co Kildare. A pivotal experience on board the custom fitting tour trucks at the Czech Open ignited his passion for club making, leading him to undertake courses at Golfsmith UK and with PING and Callaway in the USA, before returning to the European Tour to work as a club builder on the Cleveland Tour Van.

In 2011, the business moved to Killeen Castle Golf Club in Co Meath, where a state-of-the-art Workshop and ClubRoom were established to deliver a truly immersive custom fitting experience.

ForeGolf received the 2019 The All-Ireland Business Foundation – Business All-Star Accreditation, 2013 SFA Awards Highly Commended Outstanding Small Business of the Year, 2010 G.C.A. World Clubmaker of the Year, 2008 G.C.A. Award of Excellence in recognition of outstanding services to golf, 2007 G.C.A. European Clubmaker of the Year, 2005 G.C.A. Irish Clubmaker of the Year, 2003 G.C.A. European Clubmaker of the Year, Ping Anser Gold Putter Award for outstanding services to Custom Golf

As they say on their website:  “We are very different to a normal golf shop, we don’t have a huge showroom floor full of clubs. We have real target greens, high-quality range balls, and a cutting-edge TrackMan 4 launch monitor to gather extra data for precise fitting.

This performance-focused environment ensures that every golfer receives a truly personalised club fitting”. Derek Murray serves as Equipment Editor for Golf Digest Ireland and has also served as Equipment and Technology Consultant for Golf World Magazine. Press coverage includes features in the Irish Times, Irish Independent, Sunday Independent, Golf Digest Ireland, Golf World Magazine, Irish Golfer Magazine, Galvin Green Magazine, and a Golfing World video feature on Sky Sports, as well as coverage on Joe.ie.

Operating from Swords Business Park in north Dublin, the agency has quickly established itself as one of Ireland’s leading sports management and events companies, working across golf, cycling, rugby, football, and more. On the consulting side, the team works with rightsholders and partners globally, offering strategic expertise across media rights, international expansion, and sponsorship activation, having collectively worked with over 150 events and 300 brands worldwide. GolfGraffix

Founded in 2011, GolfGraffix is an Irish technology company that has been supplying numerous areas of the worldwide golf industry with innovative technology solutions and has worked with over 4,000 golf clubs worldwide.

The company is the leading destination for all golf course visualisation needs, having spent over a decade helping architects, landscape designers, and developers to craft digital golf experiences through 3D graphic design and simulation.

Based at the Horseware Buildings in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland, the company has grown from its origins as a specialist visualisation studio into a broader golf technology business with an international footprint.

GolfGraffix products have revolutionised the way golf clubs interact with their golfers, becoming the main touchpoint between the club and its customers, giving them all the information and tools they need to enhance their golfing experience before, during, and after their round.

With the acquisition of ClubNet in 2017, GolfGraffix launched the ClubNet suite of software solutions, which is a fully integrated platform for the management of a golf club.

The platform covers all aspects of club operations and has attracted growing interest across the UK market, prompting the appointment of dedicated UK sales representation to accelerate adoption amongst British clubs.

Golfmarket.ie

Screenshot of Golf Market shopping site.

Golfmarket.ie was founded by Graham Whelan with the help of his friend Sam Lonergan. The idea came from their own experience of searching for a quality used club.

They were finding it difficult to source a particular type of good-condition equipment in Ireland without paying full retail price, and equally struggling to offload old clubs gathering dust in the shed. Based in Kimmage, Dublin 12, the business was built around a simple but practical proposition: give Irish golfers a trustworthy local source for pre-owned equipment, free from the risks of counterfeits and the hidden costs of international shipping.

The business sources the majority of its used clubs from large authorised retailers and PGA Professionals, as well as directly from consumers via trade-ins and cash purchases. Every club is thoroughly inspected for authenticity and graded before listing, with a 14-day money-back guarantee and a 6-month warranty on defective items. The site also offers a regripping service and stocks a range of new accessories alongside its used inventory. The company has earned consistently strong customer reviews on Google, with buyers regularly praising Graham’s communication, fast delivery, and honest product descriptions.

Green Lamb

Founded in 1989 and based in Co Cork, Green Lamb pioneered ladies golf fashion at a time when no one was truly catering for female fashion on the course.

Designed with passion in Ireland, the brand built its reputation on understanding what women actually need when playing in clothing that performs in ever-changing weather conditions, with every piece tried and tested on the course before it reaches the customer. With over 40 years of experience in the industry, the company has remained steadfast in its mission to create exclusive collections that transition seamlessly from the fairway to everyday life.

Today, Green Lamb sells globally and is available in the finest golf shops, pro shops, and online. The brand has long been associated with the Ladies Golf Union and has served as Official Apparel Supplier to the Ryder Cup, as well as Official Apparel Supplier to the Curtis Cup GB & I teams. Supermodel and avid golfer Jodie Kidd has served as brand ambassador, further elevating its profile internationally. Sustainability has also become a central pillar of the brand in recent years, with Green Lamb committing to working with sustainable fabrics to reduce its environmental footprint.

What sets Halpenny Golf apart from standard retail is its emphasis on personalised service and expert custom club fitting. Using advanced launch-monitor technology, including TrackMan and FlightScope, their fitting specialists work with golfers of all abilities to tailor equipment to individual swing characteristics, adjusting specifications such as grip, shaft flex, and club length. This combination of retail scale and technical expertise has helped Halpenny Golf earn its place as one of the most trusted resources for both casual weekend players and serious competitors looking to get the most out of their game.

Beyond used golf balls, the company has grown its product range considerably over the years. McGuirks Golf

The oldest business on this article, McGuirks Golf is Ireland’s leading golf retail brand, with roots stretching back over half a century. The business was founded in 1967 by John McGuirk, a PGA Professional who began trading at Howth Golf Club with a clear mission: to provide quality brands at affordable prices to Irish golfers. In 1993, McGuirks opened its first large retail store on Harbour Road in Howth, and from there the business expanded from strength to strength into one of Ireland’s most recognisable sporting retail names.

Today, McGuirks operates multiple stores across Ireland, from Dublin, such as  Leopardstown Racecourse, Killkenny, Galway, Cork, Waterford and a presence in the UK in Edinburgh, as well as a strong e-commerce presence. The company is an official stockist of virtually every major golf brand, including TaylorMade, Callaway, Titleist, Ping, Cobra, FootJoy, Galvin Green, and many more.

A key part of the modern McGuirks experience is its custom-fitting service, utilising TrackMan technology and expert club fitters across its locations to help golfers of all levels find equipment tailored to their game. With over 50 years of Irish golfing heritage behind it, McGuirks remains the go-to destination for equipment, apparel, and accessories on the island.

P2 Grips

P2 Grips logo.

P2 Grips is an Irish golf equipment company founded by PGA Professional Enda McLoughlin and based in Co. Wicklow, focused on bringing practical innovation to the putting green. Established in 2016, the business was built around a simple idea: create equipment that helps everyday golfers become more consistent on the greens.

Drawing on more than two decades of coaching experience, McLoughlin set out to address common problems club golfers face when putting, particularly inconsistency in strike and difficulty starting putts on their intended line.

At the centre of the brand is P2’s patented Face-Square shaft positioning, which differs from conventional putter grips where the shaft runs through the centre. In a P2 grip, the shaft sits towards the back of the grip, helping position the golfer’s wrists in a more biomechanically advantageous position while reducing excessive wrist movement during the stroke.

Independent testing by leading biomechanics firm Quintic Consultancy found golfers using P2 Grips demonstrated improved strike consistency and face alignment at impact.

Alongside its grip technology, the company has expanded into putting accessories through its Trident Align brand.

Today, P2 Grips products are distributed through retail partners in more than 25 countries worldwide, while also selling directly to golfers in over 40 countries through its online platforms. From its base in Co. Wicklow, the company has quietly built a global presence in the competitive golf equipment market.

Rock Solid Golf Apparel

Rock Solid golf logo.

Rock Solid Golf is a Northern Irish golf lifestyle brand inspired by the rocks on the Causeway Coast of Ireland. The brand was conceived by Michael during a family beach trip, where he sketched out potential names and logos before settling on a rough design of the iconic basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway adorned with a golf flag.

Once home, Michael sought the experience and knowledge of James, a PGA Professional, and between 2018 and 2023, the brand grew organically, developing loyal customers throughout the world, stretching from Donegal to Arizona. In early 2024, Aaron and Rodney joined the team, bringing fresh ideas and expertise to help take the brand to its next stage of growth.

As they say on their website: “Rock Solid Golf Company and its relaxed vibe of midweek nines and summer sixes draws upon the natural beauty and rugged charm of the Causeway Coast. From the crisp sea breeze to the emerald green fairways, every garment is imbued with the essence of this unique landscape and iconic courses.”

The brand’s name reflects a philosophy that resonates with club golfers everywhere: the pursuit of a consistently solid standard of play, regardless of ability. Customer reviews consistently praise the quality of the garments, the attentiveness of owners James and Michael, and the brand’s ability to stand apart from mainstream golf labels.

Seed Golf

Man in dark sweater.

Seed Golf is a direct-to-consumer golf brand founded by Dean Klatt, an Australian golf industry veteran who relocated to Ireland. According to their website, “Seed was founded by Dean Klatt in defiance of the corporate monoliths that use their dominance to dictate the direction of our game… what brand or product you should use and how much you should pay for it.” The brand started with a focus on golf balls, the ultimate consumable in golf, built on the belief that players shouldn’t have to sacrifice performance just to save money. The name itself comes from tour caddie slang for a golf ball, which Klatt encountered during his years working across the golf industry in Australia and Asia.

Seed keeps prices low by designing only a focused range of balls that target key performance benefits, avoiding the costly R&D of maintaining 10 or 20 different models, and by skipping expensive tour player sponsorships entirely. Their subscription model lets customers receive balls at their best price, delivered on a schedule of their choosing, with the flexibility to change ball type or frequency at any time.

The approach has resonated widely. Independent robot testing has shown Seed balls performing comparably to leading tour models from Titleist and TaylorMade Today’s Golfer and the brand now ships to customers in over 34 countries. They have received press from the likes of the Irish Independent, the Irish Golfer magazine, and our own ThinkBusiness.ie Podcast.

Topdog Golfer

Top Dog Golf logo.

Topdog Golfer is a Cork-based start-up founded in February 2021 that immediately acquired Irish golf tech start-up PowerThru Golf in order to fast-track its development. The Covid pandemic prompted the founders to build an app where people could take part in golf tournaments over their phones, anywhere and at any time.

Led by CEO Peter O’Brien, the business set out to modernise the way golfers organise, enter, and compete in competitions, drawing inspiration from the success of fitness apps such as Strava and Map My Run in building engaged sporting communities around shared activity and friendly rivalry.

Topdog Golfer is a one-of-a-kind mobile app which offers a digital platform where golfers can create and run their own private golf competitions. The app simplifies the administration behind competitions by taking entry fees upfront, displaying a live leaderboard, calculating results, and distributing winnings to winners instantly via digital debit cards.

Its unique multi-course concept facilitates the creation of competitions played over multiple courses on the same day, giving golfers the opportunity to compete against each other whilst playing on their home course anywhere in the country. Crucially, the platform is free to use for golf clubs, with no upfront or ongoing costs, and digital winnings can be restricted so they are spent solely within the club in the pro shop, bar, or restaurant, driving meaningful revenue back into the business

Zenith Golf Apparel

Zenith Golf is an Irish-owned golfwear brand founded in 2023. Originally established in Wexford, the business is now owned and operated by Cian and Aaron Cullen, based in Dublin.

The brand focuses on delivering premium quality golf clothing at an accessible price point, bridging the gap between high-end performance wear and affordability. Designed in Ireland, Zenith products are built with a focus on clean aesthetics, comfort, and on-course performance.

The current range includes polo shirts and quarter-zip midlayers, featuring four-way stretch fabrics that offer flexibility, breathability, and versatility both on and off the course. Alongside its direct-to-consumer offering, Zenith also works closely with golf clubs, societies, and corporate groups, providing custom-branded apparel including crested polos and midlayers. This B2B focus is a key part of the brand’s growth strategy. Customer feedback is consistently positive, with buyers frequently highlighting the superior quality, excellent fit, and outstanding value for money, many noting that Zenith outperforms considerably more expensive mainstream brands.

Looking ahead, Zenith Golf aims to expand its product range while continuing to make high-quality golf wear more accessible to golfers across Ireland and beyond.
