Aer Lingus College Football Classic set to deliver major economic boost as 14,000 US fans descend on Ireland.
Ireland is preparing to welcome more than 14,000 American visitors later this month as the Aer Lingus College Football Classic returns to Dublin, with organisers highlighting the event’s growing economic impact on tourism, business and international connections across the island.
The annual showcase, which will be held at the Aviva Stadium on 29 August, will see Texas Christian University (TCU) take on the University of North Carolina (UNC) in the opening game of the 2026 US college football season, known as “Week Zero.”
“The Aer Lingus College Football Classic is a major success story for Ireland, attracting international visitors, supporting local businesses and showcasing Ireland to audiences across the United States”
The game marks the fifth consecutive year that Ireland has hosted the event and is expected to attract one of the largest influxes of US sports tourists to the country this year.
According to Grant Thornton Post Game Economic Impact Reports, the first four games in the current series have generated an economic boost of €514 million for Ireland. Organisers expect this year’s event to continue that trend as visiting supporters spend an average of seven nights in Ireland and visit an average of three destinations across the island during their stay.
The game will also be broadcast live to an estimated US audience of more than four million viewers on ESPN, while Irish viewers will be able to watch the fixture on TG4.

TCU and UNC will meet in the Aviva Stadium for the 2026 Aer Lingus College Football Classic on August 29th
This year’s contest carries added interest with legendary coach Bill Belichick leading UNC’s Tar Heels. Belichick, who won a record eight Super Bowls during his NFL career, will bring one of the most recognisable names in American sport to Dublin.
The UNC squad will also include Co Down native Adam McCann Gibbs, who could make his American college football debut on home soil.
Beyond the sporting spectacle, organisers say the event has evolved into a platform for tourism, trade, education and cultural exchange.
More than 40 business, academic, sporting and cultural events will take place during the week under the “#MuchMoreThanAGame” programme. These include the Ireland-US CEO Club, expected to attract more than 450 Irish and American business leaders, as well as community events, educational initiatives and sporting activities across the city.
Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke said the event continues to deliver significant benefits for Ireland.
“The Aer Lingus College Football Classic is a major success story for Ireland, attracting international visitors, supporting local businesses and showcasing Ireland to audiences across the United States.”
Burke added: “This year’s event is particularly significant as it forms part of the wider US 250 celebrations, marking 250 years of American independence and providing a unique opportunity to celebrate the strong and enduring relationship between Ireland and the United States. The Aer Lingus College Football Classic reflects the close cultural, educational and economic ties between our nations, while also demonstrating Ireland’s ability to host world-class international events.”
The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daryl Barron, said the event forms part of a broader strategy to position Dublin as a destination for major international sporting occasions.
“Dublin City Council is delighted to be a partner of this event for the fifth consecutive year, and we welcome the opportunity for Dublin to host another great sporting occasion like the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.”
Barron added: “Events like today’s game help to strengthen the special relationship between Ireland and the US, which has existed for longer than any of us and I’m sure will continue to blossom for many years to come.”
Aer Lingus, title sponsor of the event, said the game has become a key fixture in Ireland’s sporting calendar and a valuable driver of transatlantic connections.
Susanne Carberry, Chief Customer Officer at Aer Lingus, said: “The Aer Lingus College Football Classic has become a standout fixture on Ireland’s sporting calendar, bringing together fans, teams and communities from across the Atlantic to celebrate one of America’s most iconic sports.”
Carberry continued: “As Aer Lingus celebrates 90 years of connecting Ireland to the world, we are delighted to welcome the TCU Horned Frogs and the North Carolina Tar Heels, along with their supporters, to Dublin for what promises to be another unforgettable week of competition, culture and connection.”
The week-long programme surrounding the game will bring a distinctly American college football atmosphere to Dublin, with pep rallies, tailgating events, marching bands and cheer squads taking part in festivities throughout the city.
Each university is bringing more than 130 band and cheer team members, while a series of additional sporting events will include GAA coaching sessions, high school volleyball fixtures at Maynooth University and a women’s football match between Shelbourne FC and UNC at Tolka Park.
