We are profiling all the towns to enter this year’s National Enterprise Town Awards. Today we are looking at Mullingar, Co Westmeath.
The town was originally named Maelblatha, and takes its modern name from a mill noted in the legend of Colman of Mullingar.
Traditionally a market town serving the large agricultural hinterland, Mullingar remains a significant commercial location. It had a tradition of cattle-trading until 2003, when its cattle market was closed for development of a mixed commercial and residential scheme called Market Point. However, in 2014 the local County Council have allowed an annual Christmas Market to take place on Mount Street.
Mullingar is a truly unique place to live, work or visit and has a thriving business community. Its quality corporate parks and office developments, town centre enhancement programme, proximity to Dublin and excellent road network that links to every part of the country makes it a great place for industry, retail and tourism.
Winner of the bid to host the ‘All-Ireland Fleadh 2020’ and holder of the Purple Flag in recognition of excellence in managing the evening and night-time economy, Mullingar prides itself on its magical music and arts scene, stunning lakes, great shopping, along with attractions and activities to suit every age.
Mullingar boasts excellent top class corporate and conferencing facilities with a capacity for up to 1,500 delegates.
Mullingar also has an excellent business support network with various Enterprise Support agencies including Mullingar Chamber, Westmeath County Council, LEO, Enterprise Ireland, IDA and Westmeath Community Development.
Founded in 2018, Invest Mullingar is an initiative aimed at raising awareness of the quality and benefits of locating in Mullingar from a business and lifestyle perspective.
National Science Park is in its infancy of development and following the refurbishment of the existing buildings on site, expansion of the 24-acre campus is planned to create an all-in location solution for high end businesses, from incubation to scaling up to full potential.
